If you receive repeated leak alerts for water use that’s actually normal (like irrigation, humidifiers, or softeners), you can now reduce those alerts using Expected Usage.
This feature helps Flume learn what’s normal in your home so you get fewer unnecessary notifications—while still protecting you from real leaks.
What is “Expected Usage”?
Expected Usage allows you to tell Flume:
“This type of water use is normal for my home.”
Once enabled, Flume will reduce future leak alerts for similar activity, while continuing to monitor for unusual changes.
You’ll still get alerts if:
The water use changes significantly
The usage runs too long (typically over 24 hours)
You can turn this feature on or off anytime
This helps reduce alert fatigue without compromising leak detection.
How to enable Expected Usage
Option 1: After marking a leak as “Not a Leak”
Open a leak alert in the app
Mark it as Not a Leak
After submitting feedback, you’ll see a prompt
Tap Reduce Alerts
Flume will automatically use that event as a reference and apply the setting for you.
Option 2: From Leak Alert Settings
Go to Leak Alert Settings
Select your Flume Smart Leak Alert
Tap Reduce Alerts for Expected Usage
Turn the toggle On
Choose a past water event that represents normal usage
Save your settings
You can adjust how long Flume waits before alerting again (“Always Alert After”).
What happens when it’s enabled?
When Expected Usage is turned on:
Flume uses a past water event as a reference (“based on”)
Similar future activity may not trigger leak alerts
You’ll still be alerted if:
The usage lasts longer than your selected limit
The pattern changes
By default, alerts will still trigger if water runs longer than 1 day (24 hours).
What you’ll see in the app
When enabled, you’ll see the following under Reduce Alerts for Expected Usage on your Flume Smart Leak Alert settings:
The type of usage (example: irrigation, humidifier)
The date of the reference event
Your alert backstop duration
On your dashboard, you may also see a message indicating that alerts are being reduced due to expected usage.
If you don’t see any past events
If your device hasn’t detected any recent leak-like activity, you won’t be able to enable Expected Usage yet. You’ll be able to set it up after a future alert occurs.
Turn Expected Usage off
You can disable this feature at any time:
Go to Leak Alert Settings
Open Flume Smart Leak Alert
Toggle off Reduce Alerts for Expected Usage
Once disabled, Flume will resume normal leak alert behavior.
Important notes
This feature only applies to Flume Smart Leak Alerts
It does not affect other custom usage alerts
It is designed to reduce false positives while maintaining protection against real leaks
If you’re unsure whether to enable this feature, it’s best to leave alerts on and investigate the water use first.
