Does the Flume device work in all homes?

The Flume product works in most homes in the United States. However, before you purchase a device, please make sure that you meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Your home must have a wireless network (WiFi). You must also know your WiFi password.

  2. Your home must have a water meter. If you don't know where your meter is, click here for some tips on how to find your meter. If you don’t have a water meter, you may be able to have a plumber install one for you.

  3. Your water meter must be compatible with our Flume device. Click here to see if your meter is compatible.

  4. You must have an iOS (Apple) or Android device.

My water meter is pretty far from my house. Will the Flume device still work?

Flume has been installed on meters that are over 1000 feet away from the home. We use a 915 MHz RF signal to send data from the Water Sensor to the Bridge. This signal can travel long distances using very low power. However, if your meter pit has a heavy metal lid, this distance may be reduced substantially. If your meter is over 1000 feet away from your home, you may want to consider purchasing a Flume 2. Flume 2 has an extended range and can operate across vast distances. If Flume detects a leak, will it shut off my water?

If you have a leak, your Flume device will notify you via push notification and/or an email. However, in the event of a leak, your Flume device will not shut off your water. Systems like this do exist, but they are costly and difficult to install.

The vast majority (99%+) of leaks that we detect are low-flow leaks. These leaks are typically related to running toilets, leaky irrigation valves, water softeners, pool auto-fills, etc. With these types of leaks, it is not necessary to shut off the water. In fact, if these small leaks are detected and fixed early, they don't turn into big, costly leaks down the road.

What if I have a well?

If you have a water meter connected to your well, then the Flume device will work in your situation. If you do not have a water meter, then you will need to have a plumber install one before you can use our product.

The water meter should be installed after the pressure tank to get an accurate reading of water usage. If the water meter is installed before the pressure tank, you will only see the fill up cycles of the tank.
